How To Share Family Photo’s On Social Media With Better Privacy

Many families love to share personal photos on Facebook, but sharing a personal photo of the family to your Facebook timeline or wall, might be a privacy issue if your private photos are then shared beyond your intended circle of friends and family by friends of friends. Sharing personal family photos on Facebook can also be a privacy issue for people who don’t understand the privacy settings on Facebook and as a result have publicly available profiles.

Facebook have just announced that they will be implementing shared albums, so that family and friends can share photos and contribute to Albums, but there still seems to be some privacy issues with this new feature. Tagging photos is allowed, and the albums can appear on contributors timelines. This new feature seems less about privacy and more about encouraging people to group photos together and share collaboratively. Nice idea, but not private.

There have been other platforms around that are trying to provide a service for private photo and post sharing, but it can be hard to get other family members and close friends to join up to these new platforms, so they just don’t get used.

Create A Secret Facebook Group

One way to have better privacy on Facebook for families and close friends is to create a “secret” group on Facebook. A secret group has the strictest privacy settings of any Facebook group. You can see from the picture below what privacy settings a secret group has.

Updates can still be shared outside the group to Facebook through the share option that appears under posts and photos, so you need to have an agreement that no one share any photos or posts outside this group. Commenting and “liking” is all done within the group, no one outside the group can see comments, likes or posts unless posts are specifically shared outside of the group to a Facebook timeline.

Within the secret group you can also share files, like a To-Do list, or Christmas day arrangement list or similar. You can also create group only events, like birthdays or anniversaries, dinner parties.

How To Set Up A Secret Facebook Group

Go to your “Home” or “Wall” page on your Facebook profile, go to the left hand side bar menu, scroll down to groups menu and select “Create Group”.

When the “Create New Group pop up appears create a name for your group, add members and select “Secret Group” select “Create” to save. Then set the privacy settings for your group once you are inside the group interface. See the picture below for the step by step instructions.
