In the last few weeks, I’ve been getting a slew of scam emails, and I know that many others have been as well. Whether they are from the same mob, trying every angle till you bite.. I’m not sure, but todays Manly Daily told of a truly horrifying story today on page 9 that shows that unless the people you are dealing with are really really clever, you can get sucked in as well, despite being so careful yourself not to click links.
If you ever get an email from a banking institution or the ATO, anywhere you have money basically, look out for these tell tale signs that its bogus…(see pictures below)
And bottom line….even if you are totally convinced that its your real bank or ATO never ever …..I’ll repeat that again…Never EVER click the link in the email. Go to your bank or institution the way you always do through your browser and check to see if any of it is true. Or ring the bank or institution to check.
If your “Bank” or someone from ATO calls you and wants you to confirm any details over the phone…its a scam. They won’t do it. Ring them back….and not from a number they give you over the phone…use the number you know.
Take a look below at 4 emails I got this and last week. from “Paypal” the “Australian Tax Office”, “Westpac” banks and “ANZ” bank. I’m not with the ANZ or Westpac so that was easy…the Paypal one looked soooo phoney that was easy too, but the one I got from the ATO had the ATO logo on it, and came as I was waiting for a BAS refund….so that was really cheeky.
If you do get these, mark each message as spam in your email program, and contact your bank about it. I tweeted that I got these and both the ANZ and Wespac replied to my tweet with an email addy to report them too. Which I did. Simple. Have you got any to warn us about? What’s been your experience?
